Birding Westport
Are you looking for a short break in the west of Ireland? Westport, in County Mayo, is a popular holiday destination. This makes is ideal for short breaks or longer holidays. It is a lively town with great restaurants and pubs. In addition, there are plenty of hotels and guesthouses.
Westport is a great location for bird watching. There is a small port just 5 minutes outside the town. Use the sat-nav co-ordinates below to get to the port. You will find shops and accomodation on your left. Parking is on your right. There is also a small park with a pond, where you can sit for a while.
The quay wall stretches a few hundred meters, to a second carpark. At low tide there are extensive mud flats. These attract a variety of gulls and waders. In addition, Terns feed here during Spring and Summer.
At the North end of the inlet, the Carrowbeg river flows into the sea. Follow the path through a woodland area, to the entrance of Westport House. There is a large lake here, that attracts waterfowl and parkland birds.
