Birding Westport

Westport in County Mayo is a popular destination in the west of Ireland, for both short braeks and holidays. It is not surprising as it is a lively town with great restaurants, pubs, hotels and guesthouses, as well as plenty of shops in the town centre.

Westport is located on the Wild Atlantic Way and there is a small port just outside the town, less tha a five minute drive away. There are plenty of parking spaces here, as well as a park and and a pond. This is a popular place to go for a walk along quay wall that stretches a few hundred metres from the carpark. There is a also a carpark at the end the quay wall.

At low tide there are extensive mudflats that attract  attract gulls and waders. Terns feed here during Spring and Summer. At the North end of the inlet, a river lows into the sea and you can follow the path through a woodland area to the entrance of Westport House.

Extensive parking is available along the Quays and also alongside the park opposite the Westport Coast Hotel.
